Title: Deerspirits
The life size bronzes were commissioned to enhance the environs of a large, bucolic estate in the beautiful foothills of Northern California. J. Randall worked closely with the clients to create a visual focus near their home, integrating the spiritualism of Native American culture and the wildlife found throughout the area. Through J. Randall’s artistic interpretation the Deerspirits were born.
The story begins at the iron willow entry gate as a lively Spiritdeer leaps over the stone wall greeting would be visitors. Further down the drive an infinity waterfall, surrounded by large boulders, peacefully empties into a larger body of water where the Deerspirits face east. They stand in quiet contemplation, their eyes squinting in the bright morning sun. A Spiritdeer lands on the water surface before them. The elder Shaman gestures to his young Shaman students, frozen in study, and begins his oration, “In order to be one with your brother you must become as him. Watch and learn, learn and be.” As the spirit moves them they transform into the deer.
